Hoya curtisii (Porcelain Flower)

This charming miniature species is native to Southeast Asia across Thailand, the Philippines, Borneo, and Malaysia. It typically grows as an epiphyte, clinging to trees and absorbing moisture and nutrients from the air and rain in wet tropical forest. The species epithet honors Charles Curtis (1852–1928), plant explorer and Superintendent of Gardens and Forests, Penang, Malaysia.

This is a slow-growing, small, clinging vine with a climbing or cascading habit that grows up to 2 or 3 inches tall and 1 to 3 feet long. The species has easily recognizable foliage among Hoyas with small, pointed leaves and silver variegation. The thick, waxy leaves form a dense mat that eventually cascades, making it perfect for hanging baskets. The flowers are star-shaped clusters of 6 to 10 blooms of pink or red with a white center, though up to 30 flowers per umbel can appear. Flowers are flat and pubescent, measuring about 0.8 inches across with lime green corolla and pink corona, accompanied by a delicate, sweet-smelling fragrance.

Curtisii enjoys room temperatures of 70-80°F and will do well as long as temperatures stay above 55°F. This is an easy-to-grow, resilient species suitable for beginners.

Care Requirements: Bright, indirect light for at least 6 hours per day, closer to 12 is better, but direct sunlight should be avoided since it will scorch the leaves. Our Classic or Shaggy Aroid & Hoya Mix provides the ideal well-draining substrate. Keep generally moist but allow to dry slightly between waterings. . Humidity levels above 50% are ideal. Keep above 45F° at a minimum.
