Hoya chlorantha var. tutuilensis
This variety is native to Samoa, described in 1978 by Whistler. Often sold as Hoya betchei and/or filiformis, and has been marketed over time as IML 0545. In 2021, botanists established that it is a subspecies/variety of Hoya chlorantha, though suppliers from countries of origin and some collectors do not agree with this classification. Like most Hoyas, it grows as an epiphyte on trees in its natural tropical forest habitat.
Features narrow, dark green leaves with sharp points and prominent center veins, measuring about 1.5-4 inches long and 0.6-1.2 inches wide. Produces very pretty mixed red flowers, distinguishing it from the typical H. chlorantha which has relatively large greenish yellow to reddish flowers. Flowers have great variability, with color influenced by growing conditions, especially light, lasting approximately 7 days and fragrant. Slow-growing, making it easy to grow both hanging and wrapped on a support.
Not necessarily the easiest Hoya to grow, requiring a bit more attention than typical species. Too wet or dry and it is sad. Best suited for experienced collectors.
Care Requirements: Full sun to partial shade. Our Classic or Shaggy Aroid & Hoya Mix provides the ideal well-draining substrate. Water plenty, but let it dry out between waterings. Not lower than 57°F. Vine can grow up to 9.8 feet. Perfect for experienced collectors seeking a challenging, fragrant Hoya with variable red flower colors.
