Hoya carnosa 'Compacta Albomarginata' (Hindu Rope Plant)
This distinctive cultivar is a variegated form of Hoya carnosa 'Compacta', descended from Hoya carnosa, native to southern China (including Hainan), Taiwan, Laos and Japan (including the Ryukyu Islands). The 'Compacta' form was first discovered as a branch mutation sport at Hummel's Exotic Gardens in Inglewood, California, and was popularized under the trademark "Hindu Rope" in 1967. We no longer use that name today but it is what many have heard it called in the past.
In its natural habitat, Hoya carnosa grows epiphytically, using tree branches and trunks to support it as it grows upward.
This cultivar has the same curled leaves as the usual twisted Hoya, but with an irregular white and pink margin. Some entire stems may be entirely pure pink or white. The variegation is on the outside of the leaf, known as "albomarginata" which translates to "white on the margin". The tightly packed, thick, waxy leaves create a rope-like appearance along trailing vines. Unlike other Hoyas which are good climbers, this variety tends to trail, making it an excellent candidate for hanging baskets. Produces umbels of 10 to 50 small star-shaped flowers that mature gradually, with a floral scent that's strongest at night.
This is a slow-growing plant and can take up to 3 years to bloom in the right growing conditions.
Care Requirements: Bright, indirect light (careful to not place in direct sun). Our Classic or Shaggy Aroid & Hoya Mix provides the ideal well-draining substrate. Optimal temperature is 60–85°F. Humidity levels of 40-60% are ideal. Water when potting medium dries slightly but not completely. Prefers to be slightly root-bound.
Perfect for beginners seeking a unique trailing Hoya with stunning variegation.
