Rhipsalis sulcata
This striking epiphytic jungle cactus is endemic to Brazil, found in Domingos Martins in Espírito Santo. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and rocky areas. It grows as an epiphyte or lithophyte, demonstrating adaptability to various growing surfaces in its native environment. Unfortunately, it is threatened by habitat loss.
The plant features woody stems, about 1/2 an inch in diameter, often long and pendant, with new segments arising 2-5 together, up to 10 inches long and weakly 5-angled. Small, yellow and white flowers form on long, segmented stems which are triangular in shape. It can get very full and grow up to several feet long. The stems bloom small bell-shaped flowers, which turn into white berries after flowering. The angular stems and substantial growth create an impressive cascading display perfect for hanging baskets.
This species benefits from high humidity, about 50 to 70%, and must never be completely dry out as it is sensitive to drought despite being a cactus.
Care Requirements: Does best with morning sun and full shade in the afternoon—exposure to afternoon sun can burn the leaves, turn them yellow, or lead to spotting.
