Rhipsalis mesembryanthemoides (Clumpy Mistletoe Cactus)
This distinctive epiphytic jungle cactus is native to the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro, on both sides of the Baía da Guanabara, at elevations below 2,000 feet. This species occurs as an epiphyte on trunks of trees in public parks, where they sometimes form hanging branches which can be 20 inches long. The original habitat was presumably lowland forest. Unfortunately, this species is critically endangered and potentially extinct in the wild as it no longer occurs in any natural habitat even though it has colonized urban areas.
This epiphytic cactus features strong stems covered by tiny branchlets. Initially erect, the stems become pendant over time. The main stems are woody, cylindrical, and can grow up to 20 inches or longer and about 1/16 inch in diameter. The dense, bushy growth habit creates an attractive clumping appearance that transitions to cascading stems with maturity. Small white flowers appear at the areoles of the branchlets, reaching up to 0.3 inches long and 0.6 inches in diameter, followed by short-oblong white fruits growing up to 0.2 inches long.
Easily cultivated and tolerates neglect, making it perfect for hanging basket displays with minimal fuss.
Care Requirements: Keep at least 20 inches away from windows that receive midday or afternoon sun—exposure can burn leaves, turn them yellow, or lead to spotting. As a jungle cactus this is not a drought-resistant plant, so regular watering is essential—allow soil to dry slightly between waterings. Our Classic or Shaggy Aroid & Hoya Mix provides the ideal well-draining, organic-rich substrate for this epiphytic species. Hardy in USDA zones 10a to 11b. Perfect for beginners seeking an easy-care trailing plant.
