Rhipsalis burchellii (Mistletoe Cactus)
This delicate epiphytic jungle cactus is native to southeastern and southern Brazil in the states of São Paulo, Espírito Santo, Paraná and Santa Catarina. It thrives in tropical Atlantic forests at elevations of up to 2,950 feet above sea level.
This much-branched perennial forms whorls of thread-like, delicate hanging branches that create an elegant cascading effect. The stems are cylindrical, smooth, very slender, light green to purplish depending on light levels, with primary branches extending up to several feet long and terminal segments measuring 1.5-4 inches in length and about 1/16 inch thick.
Care is needed to make sure it only gets indirect light or it can burn. Small cream-colored flowers measuring about 1/2 an inch appear along the stems, followed by pale pink, rose-colored, or brilliant reddish magenta berries.
Among the easiest to cultivate epiphytic cacti and tolerates neglect, making it perfect for hanging basket displays with minimal fuss.
Care Requirements: Prefers partial shade. Keep at least 20 inches away from windows that receive midday or afternoon sun. Not a drought-resistant plant, so regular watering is essential—allow soil to dry slightly between waterings.
Our Classic or Shaggy Aroid & Hoya Mix provides the ideal well-draining, organic-rich substrate for this epiphytic species. Night-time temperatures no cooler than 41°F. Hardy in USDA zones 10a to 11b. Perfect for beginners seeking an easy-care trailing plant.
