Lepismium lumbricoides (Jungle Cactus)

This fascinating epiphytic cactus is native from Bolivia to Brazil (São Paulo) and northern Argentina, with distribution also extending to Paraguay. It primarily grows as an epiphyte in moist tropical forests, where it uses its specialized roots to anchor itself to trees or rocks, accessing moisture and organic matter from its surroundings.

This species features long, succulent stems that resemble worms, hence its common name. The long slender branching stems can grow 3-4 meters (10-13 feet) long, creating a dramatic cascading effect perfect for hanging baskets. The stems are typically green and cylindrical, though they may develop purple or reddish tones. During blooming, it produces small white or cream flowers, sometimes tinged with green, followed by purple-red berries. A prolific bloomer that adds year-round interest.

Its adaptability allows it to tolerate a range of conditions, making it a popular choice for cultivation and an excellent introduction to jungle cacti.

Care Requirements: Bright, indirect light—avoid intense, direct sunlight which may cause leaf burn. Well-draining potting medium suitable for epiphytic plants—such as our Classic or Shaggy Coco Aroid and Hoya Mixes. Water thoroughly when the top inch feels dry, allowing excess water to drain. Thrives in temperatures between 65°F and 75°F. Prefers humid environments—mist regularly or use a humidifier. Low-maintenance and suitable for all experience levels.
