Hoya rigida

This robust climbing species is native to Thailand, growing primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome. It comes from Thailand and was published in 1939. It grows as a climbing vine in tropical Southeast Asia, where it thrives in seasonal forests with distinct wet and dry periods.

H. rigida is distinguished by its impressive foliage and prolific flowering. The leaves vary from one rigida to another, but they are often big or even very big, with some having quite a few spots and some having only a few. Leaf size varies from 3-9" long and 2-5" wide. The leaves are leathery and glossy, giving them a robust and slightly succulent appearance, dark green with prominent venation. Some rigida turns lovely red in the sun, while others get sun-damaged yellow leaves from the sun.

The flowers are highly rewarding: slightly reflexed cream-pale green colored flowers measuring about 0.5", with pale pink-centered white corona, producing up to 40 flowers per umbel with sweet-smelling fragrance lasting up to 5 days. As with most Hoyas the fragrance is especially noticeable during the evening.

Care Requirements: Prefers medium level indirect light. Temperatures between 60-85°F. Well-draining mix with reduced watering in winter. Allow soil to dry slightly between waterings. Best suited for intermediate growers seeking a statement plant with dramatic foliage and fragrant blooms.
