Hoya ilagiorum
This striking species is native to the Philippines, specifically found on the island of Luzon. In its natural habitat, it grows as an epiphyte on trees in wet tropical forests, thriving in the humid, warm conditions typical of the Philippines. The specific epithet "ilagiorum" honors the Ilag family, known as educators and intellectuals.
Features thick, glossy leaves up to 8 x 3 inches with prominent veining. Sometimes fondly referred to as the 'Tomato Soup' hoya due to its unique flower color. Small flowers measure around 0.5 inches across in vibrant red-orange with yellow at the petal tips and a tiny dark violet corona in the center. Dense clusters produce up to 30 flowers per umbel with light, floral fragrance, lasting up to 5 days. Lemon zest scent. Significant color variations in blooms ranging from deep red to light red to orange. Fast grower and early bloomer—can bloom in less than 6 months from a small plant and becomes a frequent bloomer. Non-toxic to humans and pets.
