Hoya 'Mathilde'
The foliage has the thick, waxy feel of carnosa but serpens makes the leaves smaller and nearly round. It is a very cute plant and easy to grow. We find it to be a fast growing and rewarding.
This charming hybrid is a cross between Hoya carnosa (pod parent) and Hoya serpens (pollen donor), created by Emilio Begine in Belgium in summer 1994 as an uncontrolled pollination in his outdoor garden. As a hybrid, it does not exist in the wild but inherits traits from both parent species, which originate from the tropical forests of Southeast Asia where they grow as epiphytes.
Takes the great characteristic of small leaves from Hoya serpens and the leathery leaves from Hoya carnosa. Features silver-flecked foliage, with silvering larger than the pollen parent's, more succulent like the pod parent. Small fuzzy flowers appear in spherical umbels, pale pink to white with a soft, gentle scent, especially in the evening.
Compact trailing vines perfect for hanging baskets or small spaces.
The best part is that it is not fussy/picky like the parent plant Hoya serpens. A prolific bloomer once it gets going.
Care Requirements: Bright, indirect light—some direct morning sun can help maintain patterns but too much intense sun may scorch leaves.
Our Classic or Shaggy Aroid & Hoya Mix provides the ideal well-draining substrate. Allow soil to dry out slightly between waterings—overwatering can lead to root rot. Best kept between 65-85°F with moderate to high humidity (50-70%). Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 50°F. Perfect for beginners seeking a compact, easy-care trailing Hoya.
