Hoya cinnamomifolia var. purpureofusca (Purple Wax Plant)
This beautiful variety comes from Java, Indonesia, described in 1848. Native to Southeast Asia, particularly Malaysia and Java, it grows as an epiphyte in tropical forests, meandering up along tree trunks and branches.
This twining large leaved Hoya is best suited for growing on a large support. The leaves are big, 4.3-5.9 inches long and 1.6-2.4 inches wide. The color is dark green and the veins are quite visible. The leathery, oval leaves have a subtle sheen, and in sufficient light can show a slightly reddish-brown blush. This variety has flowers with a matching dark red corolla to the corona giving an all deep purpley red appearance, distinguishing it from the typical variety which produces green flowers. Reflexed flowers measure 0.55 inches across with red-purple corolla and large, dark red corona with yellow center; around 30 flowers per umbel; sweet honey scent. Flowering can occur several times a year under good conditions, especially in the evening. This is a slow grower in the beginning, but pretty enough to be worth it—for patient collectors looking for a really special and stunning species.
Care Requirements: Lots of light, but not bright midday sun—a spot near an east or west window is ideal. Our Classic or Shaggy Aroid & Hoya Mix provides the ideal well-draining substrate. Plenty of water, but let it dry just slightly between waterings. Minimum night temperature of not less than 50°F. Best temperatures are 65-85°F during the day and around 60°F at night. Perfect for intermediate to advanced collectors seeking a dramatic, fragrant Hoya with stunning blooms.
