Hoya lucardenasiana
This striking species is native to Luzon island in the Philippines. Discovered in 2007 by botanists Siar and Cajano and published in 2009, it was named in honor of Lourdes B. Cardenas, the former head of the Museum of Natural History at UPLB. Like most Philippine Hoyas, it grows as an epiphyte in tropical forests.
Features oval, fleshy, light green leaves that curve slightly and can turn red when exposed to bright sunlight. Leaves when new have a pleasing reddish tint and are extremely glossy, most being around 2 inches long and about 1.5 inches wide. Produces revolute dark pink flowers, both corolla and corona, up to 15 per umbel with butterscotch scent. Flowers are covered in heavy nectar almost from the minute they open. Non-twining and may make a better hanging basket than an upright plant.
This plant needs to be given considerable time to find its footing—slow to start growing, but after that grows well and flowers often.
